Cookies

Rooms.net uses a small number of cookies. Most are needed for the site to work. We also use Google Analytics to measure which pages get used. We do not use cookies to advertise to you or to sell anything about you to anybody.

What we measure, and how to stop it

We use Google Analytics to see which pages people find useful and where they give up. It sets cookies on your device that give your browser a random identifier, so that several page views can be recognised as one visit. It does not tell us your name, and we do not use it for advertising.

If you would rather not be counted, you can block cookies for this site in your browser's settings, or install Google's own opt-out browser add-on, which turns Analytics off everywhere. Everything on Rooms.net works exactly the same either way.

The cookies we set

These are set by Rooms.net itself. Names beginning .AspNetCore come from the web framework the site is built on.

  • .AspNetCore.Identity.Application — keeps you signed in. Set when you sign in, removed when you sign out. If you tick "remember me" it persists between visits; otherwise it lasts until you close the browser.
  • .AspNetCore.Antiforgery.* — protects forms against cross-site request forgery, so that another site cannot make your browser submit something to Rooms.net without your knowledge. Lasts for the browser session.
  • .AspNetCore.Identity.External and .AspNetCore.Correlation.* — used only while you are in the middle of signing in with Google or Apple, to tie the response coming back from them to the request that started it. They are deleted as soon as sign-in finishes.
  • .AspNetCore.Mvc.CookieTempDataProvider — carries a one-off message across a page redirect, such as "your changes have been saved". Deleted as soon as the message has been shown.

Measurement

  • _ga and _ga_<id> — set by Google Analytics. They hold a randomly generated identifier for your browser so that a series of page views can be counted as one visit rather than several. They last up to two years.

Third parties that see your browser

Some parts of the site load from other companies. They do not set advertising cookies through us, but loading a file from another company's server does reveal your IP address and browser to that company.

  • Cloudflare (cdnjs.cloudflare.com) — the icon set used across the site.
  • Google Sign-In (accounts.google.com) — loaded on the sign-in and registration pages only, to offer the "Sign in with Google" button. Google may set its own cookies on its own domain when you use it. See Google's own privacy notice for what it does with that.
  • Google Analytics (googletagmanager.com) — loaded on every page, and the source of the measurement cookies above.
  • Mapbox (api.mapbox.com) — loaded on a room's page to draw the map showing roughly where the room is.

The mobile apps

The Rooms.net apps for iPhone and Android do not use cookies. They sign you in with a token stored in the device's own secure storage — the iOS Keychain or the Android Keystore — which is removed when you sign out or delete the app.

Turning cookies off

Every browser lets you block or delete cookies, usually under Settings then Privacy. Because the cookies above are the ones that sign you in and keep forms secure, blocking them will stop you being able to sign in to Rooms.net. You can still browse rooms without signing in.
